Hoe (Paddles)
Paddling was the most common method of propelling Waka’s (canoes). The paddle was known as the hoe, or hīrau. Generally paddles were unadorned, but occasionally they were painted with scrolled kōwhaiwhai patterns. Paddles for purely ceremonial uses were usually carved.
